Welcome to the Southern NSW Local Health District Research Ethics and Governance

 

Southern NSWLHD welcomes your applications to undertake research within the Local Health District.

 

 

Southern NSW LHD is one of the seven rural Health Districts within the NSW public health system.

NSW Ministry of Health Policies on research ethics and governance apply for all researchers, whether or not they are employed by Southern NSW LHD.

The table below compares the two parts of the NSW system of research ethics and governance. As a researcher you must comply with both parts.

Ethical review of research

‘Research Governance review’ or Site Specific   Assessment (SSA)

Conducted by Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC)

Considers ethical aspects of the research

Conducted for the entire research project within the NSW public health system

Submitted by the coordinating investigator to the Executive Officer of the HREC

Results in ETHICAL APPROVAL of research (by the NSW HREC that reviewed the project)

Governed by key NSW Ministry of   Health policy
  Research - Ethical & Scientific Review of Human   Research in NSW Public Health Organisations [PD2010_055]

Conducted by the Local Health District’s Chief Executive or their delegate

Considers resources, skills and aspects of ‘corporate   risk’ related to a research project

Conducted for a ‘site’ (e.g. a hospital within a LHD)

Submitted by the principal   investigator via the Research Governance Officer (RGO)

Results in AUTHORISATION of   RESEARCH (by the NSW LHD where the research will take place)

Governed by key NSW Ministry of   Health policy
  Authorisation to Commence Human Research in NSW   Public Health Organisations [PD2010_056]
